Austin Energy is a public power, not-for-profit electric utility. We are one of about 2,000 public power utilities nationwide. We have an almost 120-year history as a public power utility in the Austin area.

Public power means local control and local decision-making.  Our customers help determine our electric rates and the policies and programs that meet our local needs.

Public Power and Austin's Quality of Life

When you pay your electric bill, you are contributing to a quality of life that is important to Austin’s citizens.

Our electric rates reflect your priorities:

  • Reliability — Our customers expect excellent electric reliability. Austin Energy has responded with some of the lowest numbers of power outages per customer in the nation.

  • Energy Efficiency — Our customers also have asked for, and we have delivered, some of the most comprehensive energy-efficiency programs in the country. These programs help lower energy use and keep costs down.

  • Clean Energy — Our environmentally-conscious community wants us to provide clean, renewable energy. We have been the nationwide leader in providing renewable energy through our subscription-based, green energy program.

  • Affordable Rates — Our customers also want electric rates to remain affordable and to provide help to customers who face financial difficulty. The Customer Assistance Program provides $10 million annually in discounts and waivers to help customers pay their utility bill.

  • Livable Community — Our customers want Austin to be the most livable community in the country. Austin Energy transfers $105 million a year in revenues to the City of Austin’s General Fund to help pay for police, fire and emergency medical services.  These revenues also help pay for parks, libraries, recreation centers and other quality of life improvements that make the Austin area one of the best places in the country to live and work.

Our customers can measure the performance of Austin Energy against investor-owned utilities by the return they receive in services from their rates. This return to our customers is the value of your public power electric utility.
