Environmental Excellence

Austin Energy Leads the Charge to Achieve Carbon-Free Electric Power

Wind Farm

Volunteer. Pioneer. Innovator. Adopter. Investor. Protector. Community Partner. Leader.

Each of these labels describes our commitment to environmental excellence. Through renewably-generated electric power we can make great strides toward the goal of achieving carbon-free power generation by 2050.

Our Demonstrated Commitment to Renewable Power

Austin Energy’s commitment to renewable power began in the 1990s, when we blazed a trail by purchasing power from the state’s first commercial wind plant. Since then, we have continued to responsibly build our renewable portfolio, with plans to continue well into the future.

Austin Energy's Renewable Power Measures
  Past Present Future
Power purchased from first commercial wind plant in Texas
GreenChoice® wind power available for residential customers
Investment in the largest solar installation in Texas at 30 MW
Generating 23% renewable power. On target to reach 35% renewable power generation by year 2020.
Contract signed in 2014 to harness the power of the largest single solar plant in Texas at 150 MW.
Helping 3,500+ customers install solar energy systems for their home or business. Demand for home solar energy systems continues to rise.
3.2 MW of community solar power available for residential customers who cannot install home solar energy systems.

Reducing CO2 Emissions with Renewable Energy

Despite rapid population growth and a steady increase in peak demand in the Austin Energy service area, our total CO2 emitting capacity in 2012 was nearly the same as it was in 1990. This achievement reflects our effectiveness in managing CO2 emissions through renewable energy.

Total CO2 emissions from our power plants fluctuate from year to year based on the electricity market and how often Austin Energy’s fossil-fueled resources are operated.

At this time, nearly 50% of Austin Energy’s power generation is carbon-emission free.

Boldly Representing the Austin Area and Texas with Our Renewable Prowess

Austin Energy is a member of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). ERCOT, one of 10 regional reliability councils in North America, is an independent, membership-based, not-for-profit organization. ERCOT administers and is responsible for the reliability of the state’s power grid. Austin Energy represents 4% of the statewide ERCOT generation load.

ERCOT:

  • Serves about 85% of Texas or 23 million Texans
  • Oversees 70,000 megawatts of generation
  • Schedules dispatch of power over 40,500 miles of transmission lines and more than 550 generation units

The chart below compares Austin Energy’s percentage of renewable power generation with ERCOT as a whole. The chart also compares Austin Energy’s renewable generation to national and worldwide totals, as well as CPS Energy in San Antonio.
