GBP Welcomes Two New Staff

The Green Building Program recently added two new staff members: Shelly Comer and Jaya Jackson.

Shelly is a registered architect with the State of Texas and a LEED accredited professional. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin, where she apprenticed with Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa, Italy. She received a Master of Science in Environmental Design and Engineering from Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, University of London, where she focused her studies on energy simulation as an integrated tool in building and renewable energy generation systems design. Shelly has over 10 years experience in commercial, institutional, civic and residential building design. She recently worked as the sustainability officer for University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Office of Facilities Planning and Development, during the design and construction of the School of Nursing and Student Community Center. That center was chosen as one of the 2006 AIA Top Ten Green buildings. Shelly works in the Commercial side of the GBP program and is currently focused on design review and inspection for the rating of Austin Independent School District schools along with several commercial condominium and retail buildings.

Jaya is an engineer with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech and an Masters degree in Environmental Science from Baylor University. She has 14 years of experience in the energy efficiency and renewable energy field, mostly implementing photovoltaic systems for off-grid, grid-connected commercial and school facilities. Since 1999, Jaya has been a Project Engineer with Conservation Services Group, an organization that designs, develops and delivers energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to lower energy use and cut costs while improving the comfort, health and safety of buildings. While at CSG, she worked closely with Austin Energy's Solar Rebate Program, helping to structure the program and guiding it's first customers through the installation process. Jaya works in the GBP's fast growing Multi-family program. Right now, her main focus is on mechanical system plan reviews. She's also reviewing the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) for city adoption. IECC encourages energy conservation through efficiency in envelope design, mechanical systems, and lighting systems.

Welcome to both Shelly and Jaya!
