Power Saver™ Program
Power Saver™ Volunteers

Who are Power Saver Volunteers?
Power Saver™ Volunteers are Austin’s newest champions.

By helping reduce peak demand, they help put off building new power generation plants and buying expensive electricity. So when you sign up, you’ll protect our environment and pad your pocket book too.

Why does Austin need Power Saver Volunteers?
Most of us cool homes, cook dinner, wash dishes, and do laundry at similar times—in the early evening. This heavy use, which increases during the hot Austin summer, causes a peak demand for scarce resources.

To meet Austin’s ever growing peak demand we must either generate more electricity or purchase it during the most expensive hours of the day.

But everyone doing their small part as Power Saver Volunteers can add up to big benefits: If all 338,000 Austin residential customers turned off just two 40-watt light bulbs, the energy reduction would power 3,100 homes!

How do Power Saver Volunteers help?
Sign up as a Power Saver Volunteer and Austin Energy will contact you during times of high electric demand. You even get to choose how we contact you—by telephone, email or text message.

When we contact you, we will ask you to take four simple actions to use less electricity between the times specified in the alerts:

  • Switch off unnecessary lights
  • Delay washing and drying clothes, and using your dishwasher
  • Cook dinner in your microwave oven, rather than with an electric range
  • Adjust your thermostat temperature if possible by two to four degrees

As a thank you for becoming a Power Saver Volunteer, we'll send you a
FREE Home Weatherization Kit, including:

  • Adhesive foam tape for sealing a door or window (weather-stripping)
  • Light switch & electric outlet sealers
  • Two Energy Star-labeled compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL’s)
  • An Energy Saver night light

You should receive your gift in approximately eight to ten weeks.

How do I join Power Saver Volunteers?
You can sign up online or call (512) 482-5346.
