Topic:
Energy Code Updates
Location:

LCRA Dalchau Service Center, 3505 Montopolis Drive [Map]

Description:

The current energy code (adopted January 1, 2008) includes the first steps toward meeting the Austin Climate Protection Plan's goal of requiring that all homes built in the City of Austin be Zero Energy Capable by 2015. Another round of code updates is set for 2009, which will include the following energy saving measures:

  • 90% of interior lighting must be high efficacy
  • Wall assembly performance equivalent to R-15
  • Improve window performance by reducing Solar Heat Gain Coefficient from 0.4 to 0.3, and reducing U-value (conductive heat transmission) from 0.65 to 0.51
  • Improve water heating system efficiency by up to 7%
AEGB's Residential Energy Code Specialist, John Umphress, will discuss the implications of the changes to the residential code, including how the changes will be administered.

The Climate Protection Plan also calls for energy efficiency improvements of 75% by 2015 in non-residential buildings. The commercial portion of the 2006 energy code did not require extensive local revisions to meet an incremental conservation goal because the national code advanced energy efficiency by approximately 20%. For 2009, code revision efforts identified additional opportunities for energy savings including a mechanical systems commissioning requirement, air barrier requirements, and shut off devices for overhead doors. These measures should result in significant energy savings; however, their impacts are still being assessed.

Michael Husted, LEED AP, AEGB's Commercial Code Specialist, will review the changes to the commercial portions of the published code as well as address the city’s local amendments and discuss the effects these changes will have on our community.
