Austin Energy's eBikes are for Everyone initiative earns Smart 50 Award from Smart Cities Connect

April 18, 2023

When it comes to e-mobility and access to more transportation options for the community, Austin Energy isn’t spinning its wheels. Smart Cities Connect recognized the utility’s eBikes are for Everyone initiative with a Smart 50 Award.

“This award reflects a total team effort on the part of Austin Energy and our community partners, each of which is dedicated to expanding access to eRides,” said Amy Atchley, program coordinator. “We look forward to continuing our collaboration so that this emerging technology can benefit our community, especially those that are historically underserved.”

The 2023 Smart 50 Awards recognize global smart cities projects, focusing on innovative and influential work.

In partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), Bike Texas, Austin Transportation Department and CapMetro, eBikes are for Everyone works to open access to e-mobility options. In particular, the initiative focused on connecting vulnerable communities to first- and last-mile transportation solutions. eBikes are for Everyone engaged with HACA residents and provided:

  • Hands on education and safety training around e-mobility.
  • Free helmets.
  • A one-year membership to the City of Austin’s bikeshare, MetroBike.
  • An adventure tour to critical stops like public transit connection points, the grocery store and the library.

Adding new transportation opportunities helps provide greater access to employment opportunities and improved quality of life.

“For those who don’t have or can’t afford a car, eBikes and bikesharing are great transportation options,” said Catherine Crago, head of strategic initiatives with HACA. “Families tell us that when they can confidently use affordable, reliable multimodal transportation, family members can access greater education and workforce opportunities.”

Along with these efforts, Austin Energy also offers ebike rebates to help make e-mobility an affordable option. Customer Assistant Program customers may qualify for a $1,300 rebate for an e-vehicle purchase. You can find more rebate information and eligibility here.
