Austin Energy is the nation’s 8th largest community-owned electric utility. We serve more than 420,000 customers and a population of almost one million. Serving our community
As a publicly-owned power company and a department of the City of Austin, the Austin City Council sets our policies and strategic direction. Austin Energy returns profits to the community annually — profits that help fund City services such as fire, police, EMS, parks, and libraries. Since 2010, Austin Energy’s contributions have totaled more than $100 million each year.

Austin Energy provides exceptional electric system reliability and significant expertise in serving power-sensitive industries such as high tech manufacturing.

Powering our community
Austin Energy’s total generation is nearly 3,000 megawatts. We power our service area through a diverse generation mix that is almost equally divided between nuclear, coal and natural gas. About 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable energy resources — mainly wind power.

Reducing our carbon footprint
In 2010, the Austin City Council set an aggressive goal that Austin Energy achieve 35% of its energy supply from renewable resources by 2020. Austin Energy is meeting the challenge head on.

Power purchased from two new coastal wind farm acquisitions that total 291 MW, a 30 MW solar farm, and a 100 MW biomass facility is expected to increase Austin Energy’s renewable portfolio to 27% by 2013.

Additionally, Austin Energy has a goal to reduce carbon emission levels 20% below those reached in 2005. To help meet this goal, we are currently exploring options to reduce our dependence on the coal-fired Fayette Power Project.

Saving money and the environment
Austin Energy has built some of the most comprehensive energy efficiency programs in the nation. We offer multiple rebates to both residential and commercial customers to help pay for efficiency improvements in homes and professional buildings.

In 1990, Austin Energy developed the nation’s first and largest Green Building Program. Now firmly established in its third decade, it is the most successful sustainable building program in the nation.

Between 1982 and 2006, Austin Energy achieved its first conservation power plant of 700 megawatts. Austin Energy plans to offset an additional 800 megawatts through energy efficiency between 2007 and 2020.

Supporting emerging technologies
In recent years, Austin Energy has made its mark in the area of emerging technologies. We have been actively involved in the research and development of electric vehicles and public charging stations.

Austin Energy operates the Plug-In EVerywhere™ network of 113 publicly accessible plug-in electric vehicle charging stations located at 57 sites throughout our service territory. We also offer charging station rebates to our plug-in electric vehicle customers.
