ENERGY STAR® Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
ENERGY STARŪ compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) are 66% more efficient and last six to ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. Their light quality matches or beats standard bulbs.
Tips for Purchasing ENERGY STAR CFLs
For the greatest savings, buy ENERGY STAR bulbs for the light fixtures
you use most. |
 |
Look for the ENERGY STAR logo on the package. Many of the CFLs may not have "CFL" or "compact fluorescent" text on the package, but most of them do have the ENERGY STAR logo on the package. |
 |
CFLs come in many shapes and sizes, including: spirals and mini spirals, double, triple, and quadruple tubes, circle-line, cover-a-line, cover globe, and covered bullet or torpedo shapes. There are also three-way CFLs. |
 |
Certain CFLs work in dimmable, three-way fixtures as well as torchieres. They are also available for ceiling fans. Check the package to be sure you are buying the correct bulb. |
 |
CFLs offer a range of light color and quality, as well as light output. Those with a lower number on the color range offer warmer and softer light, while the daylight bulbs are very bright white light. To save energy, find the bulb with the light output you need (lumens), then choose the watts. For reference: a
15w CFL produces 450 lumens; a 23w CFL can produce 1100 or 1600 lumens.

| Disposing of ENERGY STAR CFLs |

You can dispose of used CFLs, along with batteries, aerosol cans, cleaners, paint, and other common household items, at the City of Austin's Hazardous Waste Facility at 2514 Business Center Drive. |

Light Fixtures
Using just two ceiling-mounted fixtures and one ENERGY STAR torchiere in high-use areas can save you about $50 a year on your electric bill.
Lighting fixtures that have earned the ENERGY STAR qualification combine high performance, attractive design, with the highest levels of energy efficiency, so they save energy, save money on utility bills and help protect the environment:
| Benefits of ENERGY STAR Light Fixtures |
 |
Longer Life - ENERGY STAR fixtures must last 10,000 to 20,000 hours. This means that if you use an ENERGY STAR fixture and a CFL three to four hours a day, you won't need to change the bulb for at least seven years. |
 |
Better Light — ENERGY STAR qualified fixtures distribute the light more efficiently and evenly than standard fixtures. |
 |
Easy Access — ENERGY STAR fixtures are found at most home centers, lighting showrooms, and specialty stores. Look for qualified fixtures for the following applications: torchieres, under and over cabinets in the kitchen, ceiling-mounted, wall sconces, suspended fixtures, and outdoor lighting, including motion sensor fixtures |
 |
Lower Fire Risk — Halogen torchieres have been responsible for dozens of fires nationally, some with tragic consequences. During use, the temperature of a halogen torchiere bulb can reach 1000F, while an ENERGY STAR torchiere uses technology that operates at lower temperatures. |
 |
Longer Warranty — ENERGY STAR fixtures carry a two-year warranty — double the industry standard. |
Ceiling Fans
ENERGY STAR ceiling fans move air up to 20% more efficiently than standard ceiling fans. This can save you from $13 to $24 a year on utility bills. You may also gain air conditioning or heating savings when your fan is operated properly.
About 80% of the savings come from ENERGY STAR qualified lighting on the fan, as integrated fan lighting or attached as a light kit. If your fan doesn't include lighting, be sure to purchase an ENERGY STAR qualified light kit. These kits come with pinbased fluorescent lamps.
This lighting is attractive, efficient, and long lasting so you won't have to make frequent bulb changes.
| Tips on Using Ceiling Fans |
 |
Switch the fan and light off when you leave the room. Fans don't actually cool a room — they just cool you by circulating air. |
 |
Reverse the fan motor in winter months. |
 |
Hang your fan so that its blades are at least one foot below the ceiling, seven feet above the floor, and two feet from the nearest wall. |
