Power Saver™ Program
ENERGY STAR® Appliances

Refrigerator
Your refrigerator uses more electricity than any other appliance in your kitchen. Selecting an energy-efficient one can save you as much as $35 a year in operating costs.

What Makes an Energy Efficient Refrigerator?
Doors: Heavy doors with tight seals prevent cool air from escaping
Thermostat: An energy saver thermostat inside the refrigerator regulates the temperature
Design: New refrigerators have better insulation, more efficient compressors, and improved temperature and defrost control
Calculate your estimated savings on a new refrigerator.
When is it Time To Buy a New Refrigerator?
If your refrigerator is 10 years old or more, a new ENERGY STAR® model can be as much as 50% more efficient

Clothes Washer
Advancements in efficiency for clothes washers can save a typical household $80 a year. ENERGY STAR® clothes washers use up to 50 percent less energy and 50 percent less water than a standard clothes washer.

What Makes An Energy Efficient Clothes Washer?
Front loading: Less water is used, and less energy is needed to heat the water
High speed spin cycle: Laundry spins more vigorously, so less energy is needed to dry it
Automatic water controls: Stains and soap residue are removed through a high-pressure spray

City Rebates
The City of Austin offers $100 rebates on some models

Dishwasher
ENERGY STAR® dishwashers exceed federal efficiency standards by at least 13 percent. Most of the energy is saved through more efficient use of water.

What Makes An Energy Efficient Dishwasher?
Washing action: Effective washing action eliminates the need for pre-rinsing the dishes
No-heat drying options: This energy-saver feature allows you to let the dishes air dry
Internal water heater: This boosts the water temperature to 140 degrees to sanitize your dishes
More efficient motors: These use less energy to operate
Other sensors: Some models "sense" how dirty your dishes are and adjust the length of the cycles to compensate

Air Conditioning
Air conditioning consumes the greatest portion of your energy bill in the summertime. Buying an ENERGY STAR® air conditioner can be an investment in significant energy savings. They exceed federal efficiency standards by at least 15 percent.

What Makes An Energy Efficient Air Conditioner?
SEER rating: A Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) number helps you identify efficient air conditioners. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the appliance
Size: The size of the air conditioner should match conditioned area of the room. If the air conditioner is too big or too small, it will either run too much, or not often enough. This will make your room more uncomfortable and your energy bill higher. Allow a 10% larger BTU (british thermal unit) air conditioner if your room gets a lot of sun. Allow 4,000 more BTU/hr if the unit is in a kitchen. Add 600 BTU/hr per person for more than two people who regularly occupy the room
Improved design: More efficient compressors, better fan motors and an improved heat transfer surface result in energy savings
