Federal Stimulus Program to Improve Home Energy Efficiency in Austin
Austin Energy has received $2.9 million from the federal government to help Austin residents improve energy efficiency in their homes through the federal stimulus Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP).
Who benefits?
The program targets residents with the greatest need—those with both low incomes and high energy bills.
How many homes are eligible?
An estimated 4,800 homes already qualify for weatherization assistance. In the program’s first year, funding will let us improve the energy efficiency of nearly 400 homes.
If the funds for the first year are spent by August 2010, the federal government will award another $2.9 million. Should this happen, we will be able to improve another 400 homes.
What improvements are funded?
Energy efficiency improvements that could be made on qualifying homes include:
- additional attic, wall and floor insulation
- duct system repair and sealing
- home sealing (such as weather stripping) around entry doors
- repair or replacement of inefficient heating and cooling systems
- replacement of inefficient refrigerators
- replacement of gas stoves found to be leaking carbon monoxide
- installation of energy efficient light bulbs
