"Green Boots" Education Series Launches

Creating "Green Boots"
The public, product manufacturers, and home builders currently have great interest in green building. Also, Miki Cook, an AEGB Single Family Program staff person, noticed that many green home builders have a common problem: their trade contractors have little knowledge, experience, or comfort level with using the green techniques required by the home builder. Out of this need, the “Green Boots” idea was born and Miki has been working on it for more than a year.

At the same time, the HBA of Greater Austin has heeded its membership's call for a green building education series to help them understand what “green” is all about and how to apply it appropriately in Central Texas. By adopting “Green Boots” as their 2009 Education Series they have provided the platform needed to achieve that goal and engage trade contractors through their membership base. Home builders who attend the entire series, and trade contractors who attend the sessions specific to their industry, will receive “Green Boots” certificates. Home builders are encouraged to sponsor their trade partners for green education in their trade.

Get Your "Green Boots" On
The "Green Boots" series targets the “boots on the ground”, since that’s how many people refer to the trades and building superintendents out in the field who have the responsibility of turning a project’s green goals into a reality on their jobsites.

The series aims to be more than just green consultants preaching to the choir. Its goal is to embrace green issues at the trade-contractor level and, when necessary, challenge the “norm” or traditional methods of design and construction. Presenters are selected on the basis of their practical field experience and ties to the community, as well as their professional credentials. They understand the “why” of green building from a broad perspective and the logistics of how builders and trade contractors must support each other through the transition to greener practices.

Each month the modules focus on specific trade groups and those green issues important to that particular group. Some of the topics covered include: Green Building Design, Building Envelope, Foundations and Plumbing, and HVAC.

Detailed information on session content, schedule, and cost is available on the HBA’s web site. All registrations for this series must be made on the HBA’s web site.

Seating is limited, and there are a limited number of tabletop sponsorships for each event. Some CEU credits are available for license registrations. For more information, email Miki Cook or call 512-452-5358.
