Report Utility Service Theft

Austin Energy and its paying customers are victims in an estimated $6 billion national crime wave. Together, we lose to theft roughly $8 million worth of electricity every year. And this power theft costs more than just money: It is a dangerous crime that can start fires and cause serious injury.

Austin Energy staffs its Current Diversion program with trained field investigators who examine 15 to 20 cases of possible electricity theft daily. Together with our partners in law enforcement, we have pressed utility-service theft charges against dozens of customers, and secured jail and probation time for more than a few.

Our Current Diversion team also has issued thousands of "meter tampering" fines to recover the cost of equipment damaged and power stolen.

If you suspect someone of stealing power, call 972-RISK (7475) to report their activity. Your calls are always anonymous.

You can also report suspicious activity by email.
