Austin Energy has traditionally had some of the lowest rates and electric bills in Texas. We can make this claim because of our commitment to energy efficiency and helping our customers save money.
Because Austin Energy is owned by the citizens of Austin, our electric rates reflect citizen involvement and input.
For 18 years, Austin Energy’s base electric rate – the energy charge – did not change. As a part of Austin Energy’s mission to keep electric service affordable, the Austin City Council has established a goal that Austin Energy’s rates cannot increase more than 2 percent a year and electric bills must remain in the lower half of all electric utilities in Texas.
In investor-owned utilities, profits are dispersed to investors throughout the world. Austin Energy’s profits are returned to the Austin area community and its citizen owners.
This is the value of public power.
