Solar Car Races
Each year, students 9 – 14 use Austin’s
hot summer months to learn about renewable energy. This is
an activity that focuses on the power of the sun. It ends
with student designed, miniature solar-powered cars in a double
elimination race!
Making Solar Cars
Austin Energy provides solar car kits
containing miniature photovoltaic panels, parts and accessories.
The students use the kits to build their solar cars.
During the activity, Austin Energy staff
teach the students how technology turns sunlight into electricity.
Participating in Solar Car Races
Solar car races are a part of the
annual Aerospace Camp. The weeklong camp ends with the solar
car races. Solar car demonstrations are also available for
school classes.
Solar power is a renewable energy source.
It converts the sun’s heat and light into energy. Austin
Energy generates solar power at several area solar power installations.
