Electric Demand Sets New May Record

Wednesday, May 10, 2006, Austin Energy set a new all-time peak demand record for the individual month of May.

Demand on the Austin Energy system between 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. May 10 peaked at over 2080 MW. The previous May record of 2036 MW was set in May 2003.

This all time peak record means that on May 10, demand for electricity in Austin reached a higher level than in any previous May in the history of Austin Energy.

Austin Energy also set a new peak record for the individual month of April 2006 and in 2005 set new peak records for each individual month from June through December.

Austin Energy has sufficient generation to meet these demand levels with total generation capacity of about 2,900 MW.

Austin Energy also has the most comprehensive residential and commercial energy efficiency program in the nation. The utility’s Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program provides rebates and 0% interest loans to residential customers to help pay for energy efficiency improvements. Austin Energy also provides rebates to commercial companies to assist with energy efficiency improvements.
