Austin Energy Ranks First in Nationin
Green Power Sales
Austin Energy sold more kilowatt-hours
of green power last year than any other electric utility in
the country far surpassing the second ranked utility by more
than 140% in both sales and total megawatts, according to
recently released figures by the U.S. Department of Energy’s
National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
Austin Energy sold 251,520,000 kWh of green
power totaling 28.7 MW to Austin Energy subscribers through
its GreenChoice®
Renewable Energy Program that generates electricity from
clean, renewable sources from the wind, sunshine, methane
gas from landfills, and hydroelectricity. The total renewable
energy sold last year is enough electricity to power almost
21,000 average-sized homes year-round.
Austin Energy far surpasses other utilities
in selling green power subscriptions and creating new sources
of renewable energy for sale to customers. The second and
third ranked utilities, Sacramento Municipal Utility District
and Xcel Energy, sold 104,344,000 kWh and 103,739,000 kWh
respectively. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power
with a customer base of 3.8 million ranked fourth with 66,666,000
kWh, significantly less than Austin Energy with a customer
base of 350,000.
Austin Energy has sold more than 375,000,000
kWh of green power to customers since the GreenChoice program’s
inception in 2000 and has about 100 MW of renewable energy
in its portfolio. It also is ranked fourth in the country
for offering one of the lowest premiums for green power and
was one of the first to lock in rates as a hedge against rising
fuel prices. Currently, more than 6,500 residents, 165 small
businesses, and 31 of Austin’s largest companies and
organizations subscribe to GreenChoice.
