City of Austin, Austin Energy to receive awards for energy efficiency, green power
Mayor Will Wynn will accept for the City of Austin and Austin
Energy the prestigious Charles H. Percy Award for Public
Service today in Washington, D.C., from the Alliance to Save
Energy for being a leader in promoting energy efficiency
for more than 20 years. The award – normally presented
in the past to congressional leaders, governors and states – is
the highest honor bestowed by the Alliance that is a coalition
of business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders
dedicated to promoting the efficient and clean use of energy
worldwide.
In addition, Austin Energy also will receive today in Chicago
at the annual Green Power Leadership Awards the Beacon Award
from the Center for Resource Solutions for innovative marketing
and educational outreach that advances the use and supply
of renewable energy sources.
The Alliance to Save Energy noted that Austin Energy invests
nearly $15 million annually on energy-efficiency programs
including energy audits, rebates and loans and free weatherization
for low-income customers. Since 1982 when the programs started,
the cumulative energy savings from the programs are equivalent
to the annual output of a 500-megawatt power plant. More
than 150,000 residents and 5,000 businesses have participated
in the rebate and loan programs during that time.
The Alliance also recognized the City of
Austin as a leader in renewable energy sales. Last year, Austin
Energy sold more than 251 million kilowatt hours of renewable
energy to customers – ranking it first among utilities
nationwide. Austin Energy currently has more than 7,000 residential
customers and about 265 businesses subscribed to its GreenChoice®
Renewable Energy Program . This year, the Austin Independent
School District became the largest subscriber of GreenChoice
in Austin and the largest subscriber of green power by a school
district nationwide.
The Center for Resource Solutions sponsors national and
international programs that promote clean and efficient energy
and it also sponsors the Green-e certification program for
renewable electricity products.
