Larger than Expected Crowd Packs Austin's
Green Building Conference
The first ever U.S. International Green
Building Conference held in Austin, Texas, November 13-15,
was an overwhelming success with more than 3,000 participants
representing all 50 states and 27 countries. The conference
was hosted by the Austin Energy Green Building Program.
Conference highlights included more than
80 educational sessions covering all facets of green building
design, materials selection, case studies, renewable power,
green communities, healthy buildings, green consulting and
marketing, and much more. Most of the seminars and educational
sessions were standing room only. Likewise, the approximately
200 exhibits covered the range of green-related innovation
from no-water urinals and rooftop gardening systems to recycled
carpets and bamboo flooring.
“Based on the extraordinary turnout,
we know that Green Building is no longer a specialty. It is
the mainstream,” said Richard Morgan, Manager of the
Austin Energy Green Building Program.
Austin was chosen for the Conference because
it boasts the oldest Green Building Program in the country.
Launched in 1991, Austin Energy’s Green Building Program
was the first in the country to develop a green rating system
for both residential and commercial. The Austin program has
rated more homes and more commercial office space than any
other municipal program in the country.
