Science in the Movies, Exploring Science Day to headline Austin Area Science Festival 2002

Special effects coordinator Stephen Wolf from the Science in the Movies educational program will demonstrate the principles of science using movie stunts and props as part of the fun and learning at this year's Austin Area Science Festival scheduled March 22-23 at Palmer Auditorium.

More than 1,200 students from more than 100 schools enter projects—which have all won at their respective schools—with the five "Best of Fair" winners in the senior division advancing to the state science fair. Eight surrounding school districts as well as private and home schools participate in the science festival.

On Friday, March 22, Stephen Wolf will be featured during award ceremonies for the junior division at 6 p.m. and the senior division at 7:30 p.m. Wolf uses movie props and stunts such as exploding pots and smoke machines to teach students about science. Judging for the junior and senior divisions is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Wolf also will demonstrate the props and stunts during Exploring Science Day scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Palmer as part of the science festival. Wolf will perform from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and again from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Children can visit interactive exhibits by the Austin Children's Museum, Texas Museum of Science and History, Austin Energy's Power Town and other fun-filled exhibits. Every child will receive a passport that can be stamped at each exhibit and turned in to be eligible for prizes that will be announced every 30 minutes between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. The awards ceremony for the elementary school division is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday. Judging for the elementary division is from 8:30 to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Science project viewing is Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission to all science festival events is free. Free parking is available at the City Coliseum.
