Austin Energy linemen test speed, skills to compete for spots at linemen's rodeo

Austin Energy linemen will prepare for another strong showing at linemen rodeo competitions this year by first going head-to-head against each other this Friday to represent Austin Energy at state and international competition.

The linemen will test their speed and skill at climbing poles, performing repairs, simulating rescues of injured linemen and testing other abilities from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, at the St. Elmo Service Center, 4411 Meinardus. (Enter through the Freidrich Lane side).

Last year, Austin Energy linemen took home 10 trophies at the state competition in Seguin and finished third overall in the municipality division at the annual International Lineman's Rodeo in Kansas City. Austin Energy's team achieved perfect scores in four of the five events in Kansas City competing against the largest municipal utilities in the country.

Linemen rodeo competitions have been a part of the electric industry for several years as a way to encourage friendly competition between utilities and also as a way to sharpen skills and promote electrical safety.
