Regional effort aimed at curbing emissions from lawnmowers

The Central Texas CLEAN AIR Force, a public/private partnership of advocacy groups, businesses and governmental entities working on regional air quality solutions, is teaming with Austin Energy and Home Depot to encourage residents to trade their gasoline-powered lawnmowers for exhaust-free electric models with discounts of $50 and $105.

The sales event days will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16 at the Home Depot store at 10107 Research Blvd. (Exit Great Hills Trail) and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at the Home Depot at 3600 S. IH-35 (Exit Woodward).

The Black and Decker cordless, mulching electric lawnmower model (CMM1000) will be discounted by $105 making it just $293 plus tax. The corded, mulching electric model (MM575) will be discounted by $50 making it $130 plus tax.

These discounts will be offered when residents bring in their operable, gas-powered lawnmowers for trade in. First time electric lawnmower buyers will also earn a discount. Electric leaf blower/vacuums and electric hedgers/trimmers will be featured as well. The discounts will only be honored on the sales event days.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that between 5% to 10% of the total air pollution in urban areas is generated by gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment. This pollution can cause severe health effects for all age groups, particularly the very young, the elderly and those with existing heart/lung disease. This initiative is one of the few voluntary programs that will have immediate and quantifiable pollution reduction benefits.
