Austin Energy Green Power Program
Among Nation’s Best
Austin Energy’s Renewable Energy
Program, GreenChoice®, has been recognized as one of the
best in the nation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency,
U.S. Department of Energy and the Center for Resource Solutions.
The program is a recipient of a 2002 Green Power Leadership
Award for three achievements:
For bringing more renewable energy online
than any other program in the nation;
For bringing in more commercial customers than any other program
in the nation; and for being one of the first green pricing
programs to offer customers a hedge against rising fuel prices.
Austin Energy has 10-year contracts for
79 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated from wind turbines
and another 5 MW produced from landfill methane gas. That
represents enough electricity to power about 40,000 homes.
More than 160 small businesses and 30 of
Austin’s largest companies have subscribed to Austin
Energy’s GreenChoice renewable energy program for more
than 300 million kilowatt-hours. Additionally, more than 6,500
residents have subscribed for another 9 million kWh annually.
Austin Energy also was one of the first
and is one of only four utilities nationwide that gives green
power subscribers a fixed charge. When a customer subscribes
to GreenChoice, the fuel charge on their electric bill is
replaced with a green power charge that remains fixed for
10 years (the life of our green power contracts).
The award also cited Austin Energy for its
innovative marketing approach to businesses. Large companies
that subscribe to at least 700,000 kWh annually of green power
receive an advertising acknowledgement package.
Twenty-two of Austin Energy’s 30 largest
GreenChoice subscribers,
known as Corporate Champions, have signed up for at least
1 million kWh of green power annually and 15 of them subscribed
to 100% green power.
