Austin to host first International
Green Building Conference; More than 2,000 expected to attend
Austin will host the first International
Green Building Conference and Exposition November 13-15
at the Austin Convention Center to showcase leading practices
of earth-friendly construction and development as well as
to provide educational seminars with some of the world’s
top green building experts.
With the U.S. Green Building Council, Urban
Land Institute, U.S. Department of Energy and other partners,
Austin Energy is organizing this event that is expected to
attract more than 2,000 building professionals.
More than 200 exhibitors will be on hand
to showcase leading green building technologies and up to
80 educational sessions are scheduled covering a wide variety
of topics including energy efficiency, water use, indoor environmental
quality, site selection and financing. Several members of
Austin Energy’s Green
Building Program will speak at the conference. Austin
Energy will host a special workshop entitled, “Green
Building Programs: Past, Present and Future Lessons.”
The conference also will include a tour
of six sites in Austin – three residential and three
non-residential – selected by Austin Energy’s
staff as prime examples of green building development.
Austin Energy’s Green Building Program
was the first green building program established in the country
and the first to develop a rating system for homes and buildings
depending on the number of “green” features in
the structure. The program promotes sustainable development
through the use of earth-friendly construction and practices
such as the use of recycled building materials, energy- and
water-efficient appliances, and proximity to schools and public
transit. The National Association of Homebuilders recognized
Austin Energy earlier this year with the Green Building Program
of the Year Award for 2002.
