Winning LBJ science student returns
to Austin Area Science Festival 2001
LBJ Science Academy student Samuel Chang
won last year's Best of Fair award at the Austin Area Science
Festival and went on to become a finalist in the prestigious
Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition and
a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search.
The high school senior makes his triumphant
return this year to the Austin Area Science Festival 2001:
A Space Odyssey being conducted Feb. 9-10 at Palmer Auditorium,
400 S. First St. Admission is free.
More than 1,000 students from pre-kindergarten
through high school will display their science projects at
this area-wide science festival. Winning projects go on to
compete at the state and national level. All of the projects
at the Austin science fair already have won at their respective
schools to reach the area-wide competition.
Participants and winners at the science
festival receive ribbons, certificates or trophies. Austin
Energy - Austin's community-owned electric utility - is the
major sponsor of the science festival for the second year
in a row.
In keeping with this year's Space Odyssey
theme, the festival includes a visit from NASA astronaut Christopher
"Gus" Loria from the Johnson Space Center and a
laser-light show after each award ceremony.
Project viewing is Friday, Feb. 9, from
4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10, 2-5 p.m. The award ceremonies
Friday are for the junior division at 6-7:30 p.m. and the
senior division 7:30-9 p.m. The award ceremony for the elementary
division is 4-5 p.m. Saturday.
