About the Pilot Program

Plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) use a lot of electricity.
Charging your car can place as much demand on Austin
Energy’s system as your house. Fortunately, that electricity
is cheap when compared to gasoline – about one-sixth the
cost on a per-mile basis.

Depending on when and where they charge, PEVs can strain our system. The solution is smart charging, which will help PEV drivers charge when demand is lowest, and keep costs down for the entire community.

The goal of the Plug-In Partners Pilot Program is to develop tools to help drivers charge at the smartest times.

How Plug-In Partners Works
Austin Energy will provide a rebate of 50% of the cost of the purchase and installation of a Level 2 charging station. The maximum rebate amount is $1,500.

In return, you must agree that Austin Energy may replace your Level 2 charging station with an Austin Energy-owned charging station, at no cost to you. In order to be eligible, you must have your station installed by an approved contractor. You must also have purchased or leased a plug-in electric vehicle. Gas vehicle conversions that meet program criteria are also eligible.

Also, you will be asked to share information about charging habits and participate in an Austin Energy charge management pilot, as defined in your Austin Energy rebate and program participation agreement.
