Creating a Market for PHEVs In Austin

Making PHEVs Attractive

The City of Austin is developing a variety of strategies to increase the attractiveness of Austin as a gas-optional market for auto-makers. Initiatives include:

Creating an incentive program to encourage the future purchase of PHEVs by Austin Energy customers
Supporting local, state and federal policies that promote PHEVs
Requesting the help of the environmental community and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce to advocate for the future purchase of PHEVs
Initiating an effort to establish similar incentive programs in the 50 largest cities in the United States

Benefits for the Austin Community

Electrification of the transportation sector is a very attractive idea for Austin Energy.

Electricity can either do the work of running a transportation vehicle, or produce an alternative fuel for the transportation vehicle. It is both a “fuel” and a “fuel maker.”

Key Benefits of PHEVs for the Austin Community
Providing fuel (electricity) for the transportation market could provide substantial revenue to the City’s electric utility, Austin Energy.
Austin could enjoy better air quality. An electric gallon of gas may be less polluting when generated at a coal plant. Electric gallons generated through renewable resources (wind, solar) are far superior.
Diversifying into electrical fuel will provide Austin residents a hedge against the potential results of high demand and constrained availability for oil.
Electrifying the transportation sector fits well with Austin Energy’s needs and capabilities. Austin Energy’s load at night is 50% of its load in the afternoon. A fleet of PHEV charged during the night would not stress our system.
Acting now will enable our community to reap the benefits of the technological and economic developments that will be realized; and, the community will profit as an electric transportation cluster develops.
