Plug-In Austin
Building a Market for Gas-Optional
Hybrids
Policy makers, industry analysts, and environmental
groups agree that a growing confluence of economic, environmental
and strategic conditions may change how we drive and what
we drive in the future. In short, there is a dramatic need
to reduce our dependence on oil.
Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles
One technology with the potential to significantly
reduce oil consumption is the Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle
(PHEV). Plug-In Hybrids are outfitted with a battery pack
sufficient to power the vehicle for 35 miles or more on battery
power alone. The plug-in is recharged by plugging into a standard
electrical outlet. The cost of an “electric” gallon
of gas is estimated to be less than $1.00. A plug-in vehicle
could get up to 100 miles per gallon of gasoline.
Plug-In Hybrids can: save fuels costs for
consumers and businesses; reduce air pollution; and decrease
dependence on imported oil.
Send Automakers a Message
Under the direction of the Austin City
Council, the City of Austin and Austin Energy are leading
Plug-In Partners, a national
campaign to demonstrate to automakers that a market exists
today for plug-in hybrids. You can participate by signing
the Plug-In
Partners Petition indicating that you would seriously
consider purchasing a PHEV if the cars are manufactured.
Businesses
can do the same thing through “soft” fleet orders.
